Freedom Park, Bangalore is a beautiful modern day park with great historical significance, as the park used to be central jail earlier.
The once Central Jail was built in 1866 by British Government, when the freedom movement in India was picking up and they required more jails to accommodate the freedom fighters.
The earlier central jail witnessed several freedom fighters before independence and during the emergency regime in 1975 including Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani.
Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) later decided to convert the jail to a park with the objective of creating green cover and lung space in the heart of Bangalore, while keeping the historical significance of the place.
BBMP held a national level competition to redesign the central jail which was won by architect couple Soumitro Ghosh and Nisha Mathew Ghosh, who then developed the park in a budget of Rs 17.35 crore.
The new park was opened for public in November 2008.
Freedom Park features many children’s play areas, cultural and leisure joints, state-of-the-art information corridor, Museum, Art Gallery and more.
6 acres of the Freedom park is dedicated to Protests and Rallies with the objective of uninterrupted city’s traffic, as such protests tend to disrupt public activities.
India Against Corruption in support of Anna Hajare was held at this place.
Freedom Park, Bangalore has all the qualities to be one of the major tourist attractions of the city by possessing both historical significance and modern day beauty.
