Banashankari Amma Temple is one of the very famous temple in Bangalore, not because of the temple looks but because of the beliefs, surrounded by the temple.
In 1915 Somanna Shetty, a Goddess Banashankari devotee, brought a deity of the Goddess from Badami’s Banashankari Amma Temple and established here.
The interesting fact about the temple is, devotees offer prayers to the Goddess during Rahukala, which is considered as inauspicious time for performing prayers in Hindu religion.
A folklore behind this tradition is, once three Pativratas visited the temple and asked the temple’s pujari to perform Puja in Rahukala. Though the pujari refused to do first, the ladies insists and makes him perform the Puja. After completion, the pujari comes out to offer them the Prasadam, but finds that they have Vanished. The very fact made the people believe that, the visited ladies were Goddesses and offering prayers during Rahukala brings happiness and good things to life.
The way of offering prayers at the temple is also very interesting. Devotees creates Diyas from lemons by cutting them half and removing the inside pulp. They then put oil inside and lights them.
Tuesday, Friday and Sunday are considered as the most auspicious days and huge number of devotees offer prayers on these days.
Every year devotees celebrate three festivals in the temple. Goddess Banashankari birth anniversary on 13th September, Dussehra festival and anniversary of the temple in the last week of December or first week of January.
The temple is located in Banashankari area, whose name originated because of the temple itself.
