St. Mary’s Basilica is the oldest church in Bangalore located in Shivaji Nagar.
It is the only church in Karnataka and sixth in India that was elevated to the status of a minor basilica.
The formation of the church is dated back 17th Century, which was the initial period of Bangalore city formation.
In the process of restoring Catholic religion in this region, in 1803 Fr. Jean-Antoine Dubois built a Chapel with a thatched roof in Bili Akki Palli or Blackpalli, the area which is now known as Shivaji Nagar and offered mass there.
The initial structure of the Church was used to known as Kaanike Matha Devalaya, which means Goddess of Gifts Temple.
In 1813 Fr. Jean-Antoine Dubois enhanced the church and established residence for priests and renamed it to Church of the Purification of Our Lady.
During 1832 communal riots, the church was pulled down and later was rebuilt during 1856–1882.
The new church was consecrated by Bishop Jean-Yves-Marie Coadou on 8th September 1882.
In 1973 the church was elevated to the status of Minor Basilica through an edict issued by Pope Paul VI.
St. Mary’s Feast, held every year for 10 days in the month of September, the festivities that attracts thousands of devotees from various places. During this feast mass marriages are conducted for the needy and poor, and Holy Mass is offered in several languages.
